MATAMOROS, Mexico (AP) — About two dozen makeshift tents were set ablaze and destroyed at a migrant camp across the border from Texas this week, witnesses said Friday, a sign of the extreme risk that comes with being stuck in Mexico as the Biden administration increasingly relies on that country to host people fleeing poverty and violence. The fires were set Wednesday and Thursday at the sprawling camp of about 2,000 people, most of them from Venezuela, Haiti and Mexico, in Matamoros, a city near Brownsville, Texas. An advocate for migrants said they had been doused with gasoline. “The people fled as their tents were burned,” said Gladys Cañas, who runs the group Ayudandoles A Triunfar. “What they’re saying as part of their testimony is that they were told to leave from there.” There were no reports of deaths or significant injuries. But about 25 rudimentary shelters made up of plastic, tarps, branches and other materials were torched in a sparsely populated part of the camp. SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants’ deficit against the New York Mets grew from one run to four runs in a span of about a minute Friday night – and not without an inquiry from manager Gabe Kapler.Catcher Joey Bart fielded a check swing from Jeff McNeil in the fifth inning right in front of home plate, but his throw to first base went off McNeil’s back and into right field, allowing Luis Guillorme to score from second base.Kapler came out of the dugout to talk to home plate umpire Bill Miller about McNeil potentially being inside the line on his way to first base, but the discussion was brief. The next batter, Pete Alonso, took the first pitch he saw from Anthony DeSclafani over the center field wall, giving the Mets more than enough offense in what became a 7-0 win over the Giants before an announced crowd of 27,551 at Oracle Park.“I did go out there to ensure that the play was not reviewable, and then asked (Miller) if he would be willing to check with the other umpires,...Moore’s OT power-play goal gives Kings 3-2 win over Oilers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Trevor Moore scored a power-play goal at 3:24 of overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series. After Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was called for high sticking at 1:44, Moore, who grew up in nearby Thousand Oaks, California, took Gabriel Villardi’s pass from behind the net and put it between the legs of Edmonton goaltender Stuart Skinner to give the Kings their second OT victory of the series.Moore’s goal was upheld following a lengthy review to determine if Villardi should have been called for high sticking before the game-winning goal. The Kings have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with Game 4 on Sunday night in Los Angeles.Alex Iafallo and Adrian Kempe also scored for the Kings. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 38 shots. The Kings had a pair of power-play goals and are 4 for 15 in the series.Edmonton’s Connor McDavid had the second multi-goal playoff game of h...Jokic has triple-double, Nuggets beat T-wolves for 3-0 lead

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets delivered the type of disciplined performance that’s a prerequisite for lasting a long time in the NBA playoffs. The Minnesota Timberwolves sure aren’t there yet.Jokic had his seventh career triple-double in the playoffs with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists and the Nuggets beat the Timberwolves 120-111 on Friday night to take a 3-0 lead in the first-round series.“We didn’t want to give them life,” said Jokic, the two-time reigning NBA MVP who led the league with 29 triple-doubles this season. “We wanted to be the aggressor. We wanted to punch them first.”Michael Porter Jr. had 25 points and nine rebounds and Jamal Murray added 18 points and nine assists as Denver withstood another dashing game by Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards to send a loud crowd of white-shirt-wearing fans home from another frustrating postseason loss.“Proud of the group,” Nuggets coach Mike Malone said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two shootings in Washington, D.C., on Friday night resulted in eight people, including a young girl, suffering injuries, the Metropolitan Police Department said. There were no fatalities in the two shootings, which police said could be related because they occurred in the same area of the city in a short time frame.About 10 p.m. police responded to reports of shots fired on Lebaum Street and found seven men who suffered gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening, Assistant Chief of Patrol Services South Andre Wright said in a news conference at the scene. Most of the victims took themselves to hospitals, Wright said.“There was some chaos, obviously, because of the number of victims and the loved ones,” he said. While officers were on Lebaum Street, police received a report of a shooting on 2nd Street, where they found a 12-year-old girl who had suffered “a gunshot wound to her lower extremities,” Wright said, adding that the injury was not life-threatening.Police w...Identity-less Timberwolves fall into 3-0 hole after Game 3 loss to Nuggets

The NBA’s regular season reveals more than most recognize. Over the course of 82 games, identities crystallize.Denver established one — a fine-tuned machine centered on two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokic, who’s armed with a couple elite scorers and a host of role players who perfectly balance out the team’s general skillset. The Nuggets made a few key offseason additions last summer to fortify their defense, but the core has been set for years and has built a profound understanding of how to execute in the most critical moments.Minnesota’s identity is that it doesn’t have one. What the Timberwolves excelled at or relied upon changed numerous times over the months, and the results fluctuated accordingly.“We’ve struggled with a consistent identity all year, whether it’s been two bigs, or a small lineup, or Rudy only or whatever,” Finch said. “We obviously aren’t there yet.”So when times got tough or tense, Minnesota had nothi...Daily horoscope for April 22, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS – Nikola Jokic slapped himself eight times, smacking his biceps and ribs as if the Macarena had only recently reached Serbia. In a 120-111 Game 3 victory that featured a glaring 35-13 free-throw disparity in favor of the Timberwolves, Jokic was tired of being beaten like a punching bag. Rarely, if ever, has he been so outright demonstrative and disrespectful to officials. But Friday night’s Game 3, with a chance to seize a commanding 3-0 lead over Minnesota, warranted such overt gesticulations.“If something is obvious, I just like to say it’s obvious,” Jokic said delicately, after polishing off a 20-point, 12-assist, 11-rebound triple-double that featured no trips to the free-throw line.Assessing Jokic’s night, Nuggets coach Michael Malone formed a zero with his fingers and peered through the hole to represent his astonishment at the unique feat. But Jokic doesn’t show up the officials, risking his reputation and a technical foul, if he and the Nuggets didn’t intend to crus...Latest news
