Ask Amy: They let their kids roam, and it ruins our gatherings

Dear Amy: My husband and I have been married for more than 20 years. Whenever we are invited to family gatherings, his siblings do not mind their own children. This can lead to situations, including the youngsters wandering unattended by the lake, riding bikes into busy roads and oncoming traffic, and hitting the family dogs. The family would rather sit around, visit and drink while their children run amok, damaging property and being out of control. For years, I have stepped up to keep an eye on the children as I felt it was irresponsible to leave young ones unattended. As new children are born into the family, it is always the same.I, at 40+ years old, don’t get a chance to visit with adult family, as I am chasing the littles around to *literally* put out fires. My husband and I have brought it to the attention of the in-laws, but they shake it off and say I should just join them and let kids be kids.Am I wrong to think that young children should have an adult (or responsible t...Defending champion U.S. crashes out of Women’s World Cup after losing to Sweden on penalty kicks in round of 16

An award-winning film about desegregation across the D.C. area brought a glimpse of a Brandywine school’s evolving history to audience members at the Martin Luther King Jr. Public Library in Northwest Saturday afternoon.Michael Streissguth’s “The Tower Road Bus” examined the struggles of integrating public schools in Prince George’s County, Maryland. In particular, the film focused on one school, Crestview Elementary, and its first Black principal, Dotson Burns Jr.“I was curious about how they experienced integration, and I wanted to tell their story,” Streissguth said, adding that one of the film’s goals is highlighting the African American front-line experience. In 1972, nearly 20 years after Brown v. Board of Education, 30,000 Black students had their lives uprooted overnight. At the time, a court order told Prince George’s County to stop dragging its feet, get students onto buses and integrate.“Many communities reacted in different ways t...After upstaging group rivals, Nigeria ready to take on England at Women’s World Cup

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — When he dared speak up about pay and conditions for the Nigeria women’s team, Randy Waldrum was described by one federation official as the worst coach to ever lead the Super Falcons to a Women’s World Cup.Now, after orchestrating a run to a knockout-stage game against European champion England following a scoreless draw against Olympic champion Canada and an upset over co-host Australia, he’s still got the podium. He says he’ll use it at every opportunity to highlight how much better things could be.A guaranteed pay deal for the national team, better training facilities for all players and more women in the coaching ranks — not just in Africa, but everywhere — are high on his agenda. Those are items he’ll address after this World Cup, where he’s putting no limits on his team.Nigeria has qualified for all nine editions of the Women’s World Cup but has never won a game in the knockout rounds.

Some 30 migrants missing after shipwrecks off Italy’s Lampedusa

Around 30 people were reported missing after two shipwrecks occurred off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa in the night from Saturday to Sunday. The Italian coast guard on Sunday said it recovered two bodies and rescued 57 migrants, Italian news agency Ansa reported. The two boats had set off from the Tunisian port of Sfax and sank on their way to Europe, the agency said, citing survivors’ accounts. The first boat is said to have carried 48 people, the second 42; the coast guard found the survivors — as well as the two victims — about 46 kilometers southwest of the island. The coast guard could only confirm the number of survivors and the recovery of two bodies, but not the number of people missing, according to Reuters. Over 2,000 people have arrived in Lampedusa over the past few days after being rescued by Italian patrol boats and NGO groups, as strong winds make sea conditions around the island more dangerous. Operations began on Sunday to rescue a group of migrants...US knocked out of Women’s World Cup after penalty shootout loss to Sweden

(CNN) — The US’ participation in the Women’s World Cup is over, ending in the cruelest of defeats. It was tense, the sort of match which causes the stomach to churn, but it is Sweden which progresses to the quarterfinals, stopping the two-time defending champion from achieving a historic three consecutive world titles, with a thrilling penalty shootout victory in Melbourne on Sunday. The match was decided by the video assistant referee (VAR), with referee Stéphanie Frappart, after reviewing the action, deeming that Lina Hurtig’s penalty had crossed the line despite the US’ Alyssa Naeher getting her hands to the ball and initially appearing to save it.Sweden’s players celebrated joyously, while there were tears from the US players, their participation ending in the round-of-16, the earliest the US has ever departed a Women’s World Cup.With the score goalless after 120 minutes of play – 90 minutes of regulation time and 30 minutes of extra-time – the match had to be decid...Javier Assad’s emergence with the Chicago Cubs has provided needed versatility: ‘Guys like that are extremely valuable’

Chicago Cubs right-hander Javier Assad typically ends each inning the same way.He pulls off his sports frames, pops the glasses on the top of his cap and then tips up the brim as he walks toward the Cubs dugout. The sequence more often than not this season has marked a good outing for Assad, answering the call to whatever situation manager David Ross put him in.The Cubs entered Saturday with varying degrees of odds to make the postseason, ranging as high as 67.3% by FanGraphs to 62.3% by Baseball Reference to 45.3% from Baseball Prospectus. As they’ve steadily climbed back into the playoff hunt the last two months, the emergence of Assad’s versatility and reliability has helped stabilize the bullpen.“What’s helped me is just staying locked in to the strike zone and executing the pitches to the best of my ability,” Assad told the Tribune through an interpreter. “Just be ready for any situation. The biggest thing for me is staying healthy so talking...Latest news
