ST. LOUIS - According to Census Bureau data, white St. Louisans are nearly twice as likely as black St. Louisans to own a home. Black homeownership rates remain the lowest of all racial groups in the country. April is Fair Housing Month, and there’s a St. Louis realtor who’s advocated for fair housing since the 1970s. Her name is Barbara Heise.“White man has gained wealth by selling his house, right? Not so in the black community," Heise said.Heise’s fight for fair housing can be traced back to the days of blockbusting. Top story: Police officer’s gun and body armor stolen from his car “You could get me to tears on this subject because of my passion. It’s just not fair," she said. More than 40 years later, she’s still standing up for equity and inclusion in St. Louis communities.“Affirmatively furthering fair housing doesn’t have anything to do, nothing to do with affordable housing," Heise said.Heise co-founded the nonprofit “With Action." The group advocates for change...Denver weather: More record-breaking heat and rising fire risks

Published Fri, 27 Dec 2024 06:04:50 GMT
Inglewood business owners expressed their concerns Tuesday about a planned Los Angeles Metro project that could displace dozens of companies. The project, called the Inglewood people mover or Inglewood Transit Connector, will add a 1.6-mile length of track that can bring travelers from Metro's K Line to the city, home to prominent attractions like SoFi Stadium. The tradeoff, however, is that 41 businesses will have to relocate to make space for new stations. More than 300 people work for those companies, according to the Daily Breeze. The Inglewood City Council unanimously approved a plan to move the businesses and provide relocation assistance, though some owners expressed some trepidation."The idea that we're going to get all these people who are going to ride the train and come for 1.6 miles is something I'm still questioning," one public speaker said. "Is that really going to be something that's going to serve our community?"The relocation plan is expected to cost $12 million, a ...Presale Codes for Babymetal and Dethklok Babyklok Tour with Jason Richardson

Daktyl and Benni Ola Enter the Matrix: Production wiz and multi-instrumentalist Daktyl has collaborated with Californian spoken word poet and songwriter Benni Ola on a new project, the first fruit of which is the new “Matrix” single. It’s a pulsating, hypnotic tune — the two men blending their styles seamlessly.“I started producing when I was at uni, my brother gave me an old copy of reason and I was immediately hooked,” says Daktyl.“For a long time I never considered myself a producer,” adds Ola. “It felt like this big title and responsibility I was afraid of. It’s only recently I’ve decided to allow space for it, initially starting with vocal production and then taking up percussive instruments. I’ve played bongos since I was a teen and now I’m leaning into something I’ve always known.”Both artists struggle to define their current sound.“I’m terrible at answering this question, I always just say electronic mus...Republican attorney joins California race for Feinstein Senate seat

Dianne Feinstein, joining a growing field in a state known for its liberal political tilt.Eric Early — an unsuccessful candidate for state attorney general in 2022 and 2018 and for Congress in 2020 — said he will campaign for the votes of “forgotten” Californians contending with rising crime, drug use, high taxes and what he called “far-left” ideology creeping into government. He said in a statement on his website that he will “stand up to the Socialist, ‘woke’ interests that control Washington, D.C.”Feinstein, the oldest member of Congress, said in February that she would not seek reelection. Saratoga residents will not have to pay the city to cut down blue gum eucalyptus trees for the next 2-1/2 months. The trees did about $250,000 in reported damage during last month’s storms.Saratoga City Council voted April 5 to waive the $130 fee for blue gum eucalyptus tree removal through June 30 in the wake of the storm damage they caused to public and private property. Blue gum eucalyptus trees, which came to California from Australia, have shallow roots, and studies show they are more prone to falling. The city, which has fairly strict protections in place for its trees, will still require applicants to replace any they remove. Council added the requirement after a couple residents voiced concern that replacement of the removed trees wasn’t guaranteed under the initial draft of the urgency ordinance pausing the permit fees.RELATED: Why are so many Bay Area trees turning destructive and deadly in recent storms?
