(AP) — After losing two centers to free agency, the New York Giants drafted center John Michael Schmitz of Minnesota in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday night.Starter Jon Feliciano signed with the San Francisco 49ers and backup Nick Gates went to Washington. While the Giants have 14 offensive linemen on their roster and said they were confident one could play center, they opted to take Schmitz. He played five seasons with the Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Conference, starting his final 35 games. The selection was somewhat surprising because the Giants needed a deep threat at wide receiver and they chose a lineman with the 57th overall selection.New York selected Maryland cornerback Deonte Banks in the first round with the 24th pick overall. It has one pick in the third round, the 89th overall selection.Schmitz was described by the scouts as strong, tough and durable but not the quickest guy on his feet.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl and https://...

RENTON, Wash. He was a first-team all-Southeastern Conference selection his final season, when he had 60 tackles, seven sacks and an interception. Hall is confident in his ability to flourish wherever the Seahawks plug him in, having played all over the field in college.“I did a lot,” Hall said. “These last two years, I was asked to do a lot of different things. I was on the line of scrimmage playing outside, I played (defensive) end, I played outside backer, I dropped, I rushed, I stepped back into (middle linebacker) position. … I was moved around a lot.”Hall was named a team capt...

Eli Stokols is a White House correspondent and co-author of West Wing Playbook. We might never again have a president like Donald Trump, a reality TV star who spent hours in the Oval Office watching TV and reacting in real time to coverage of himself. But while he can’t match his predecessor’s compulsive appetites, that doesn’t mean Joe Biden isn’t obsessed with the media in his own way. He’s not just an avid media consumer (yes, there’s a TV hidden in the Oval Office), he’s also very attuned to how the media portrays him and is likely to get miffed over critical coverage and the media’s myopic focus on breaking news over the big picture. He’ll call up his favorite writers and columnists and he pays close attention to the number of people defending him on TV.On this weekend that celebrates the long history of chronicling the most important office in America, we thought we’d find out how the current occupant of the White House consumes the work of those who regard him so relentlessly....
