The EU has been urged to review its policy towards Pakistan due to an alleged rise in human rights abuses in the country. The demand was made at a conference in Brussels on Monday (8 May) organized by Human Rights Without Frontiers (HRWF).Moderator, Willy Fautre, director of HRWF, a respected Brussels-based rights group, outlined a range of concerns including alleged abuses against women and young girls in the country. He described it as “an appalling situation” which demanded “urgent” action by the EU and international community.Women, he asserted, were “still treated as 2nd class citizens” in the country, especially when it came to job opportunities and education. It was pointed out that the literacy rate for women was just 45 percent compared with 69 per cent for men. There was a “vicious circle” of gender based violence, he told the event.Another speaker, Jose Luis Bazan, an expert on asylum, raised concern in particular about the country’s blasphemy laws. LOS GATOS — Joe Kapp made the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1970 with the memorable headline, “The Toughest Chicano.”The brawling, take-no-prisoners quarterback from Salinas never strayed from the handle even while struggling to recall his colorful past because of the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative condition he attributed to taking too many hits during his long career at Cal and in the professional ranks.Kapp, the only quarterback to appear in the Rose Bowl, Super Bowl and Canada’s Grey Cup died Monday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He was 85 years old.“I can remember things way back but I can’t remember what I had for breakfast — or if I had it,” he said in a 2015 interview at his home in Los Gatos. But the tough-talking quarterback was ready to recount his memorable life and times to anyone willing to listen. After leading Cal to the 1959 Rose Bowl, Kapp opted to play in Canada where he cemented his roughhouse reputation. LOS ANGELES — Jordan Poole sat in a folding chair facing the inside of his locker with his back turned to the center of the cramped visitors locker room at Crypto.com Arena. He didn’t want to talk much after the Warriors’ 104-101 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night.“I don’t got nothing for y’all,” he said as music blared from his iPhone.Poole, a key piece to last year’s improbable championship run, has had a rough go this time around in the playoffs and he’s provided little answers as to why, mainly because he said he’s also stumped by what’s going on.Monday wasn’t Poole’s night, but neither was Saturday or Thursday and some other games before that. Poole played his way into a nine-figure extension last offseason by stepping up big when Stephen Curry was injured and being a dependable sixth man on a championship team. But he hasn’t been able to replicate that on a consistent basis this year...Oakland teachers strike Day 4: OEA holds news conference

At Al Jazeera’s headquarters in the occupied West Bank, in a high-rise building by Ramallah’s central square, Shireen Abu Akleh’s colleagues have turned her office into a memorial. A room that was once filled by the veteran correspondent’s voice and laughter is now decorated with flowers, portraits, and tributes to her life and career from all over Palestine and the world. This week marks one year since an Israeli soldier killed the Palestinian American journalist with a single shot to the head while she was reporting from the city of Jenin. For her former colleagues, her absence is as dominating as her presence once was.“She was a legend,” Rania Zabaneh, an Al Jazeera producer and friend of Abu Akleh told The Intercept during a visit to the office earlier this year. Abu Akleh was universally loved among her peers and a household name across the Middle East. While she spent her career covering the daily tragedies of Palestinian life under Israeli occupation, her co-workers remember h...Latest news
