European Union lifts sanctions on some Russian businessmen

The restrictions against them turned out to be unfounded, like earlier sanctions against SyriansLast week, the European Union decided to remove three Russian businessmen from the EU sanctions list: the former CEO of the online marketplace Ozon, Alexander Shulgin, the former co-owner of gas producer Nortgas, Farkhad Akhmedov, and the founder of ESN Group, Grigory Berezkin.Restrictions against them were introduced in April 2022 under the same justification, namely that they are “leading businesspersons” from economic sectors “providing a substantial source of revenue to… the Government of the Russian Federation.”Shulgin, who stepped down as Ozon CEO a few days after being targeted by personal sanctions, managed to successfully appeal the restrictions this month. Turkish diplomats attacked on USC campus

A demonstration at the University of Southern California turned to chaos Friday when violence erupted between Armenia protesters and Turkish diplomats.  The violence broke out following a conference on Turkish foreign policy at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Armenian students and community members were protesting the timing of the conference when things grew heated.  Video captured a handful of protestors chasing after the diplomats, including the Turkish Ambassador, yelling and throwing bottles at them. Authorities investigating fatal RV fire in Sun Valley

A motorhome in Sun Valley erupted in flames Monday night, leaving one person dead and another in need of medical attention.The fire was reported around 9 p.m. in the 11800 block of West Strathern Street. Emergency crews responded to a fatal RV fire in Sun Valley on Oct. 2, 2023. (RMG News)Los Angeles police officers patrolling the area responded to the scene along with Los Angeles County firefighters. Crews doused the flames and found a body inside the motorhome, according to stringer news service OnScene.TV. L.A. city councilman accused of violating ethics laws

Los Angeles City Councilmember John Lee has been accused of violating government ethics laws as part of an investigation by the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission.Lee, who represents the 12th District, which encompasses the northwest half of the San Fernando Valley, is alleged to have accepted gifts in excess of the government set gift limit, allegedly failing to report gifts, misusing his position, and aiding and abetting another person's misuse of a city position.The other person in this instance is Mitchell Englander, a former Los Angeles City Councilmember who was sentenced to prison on federal corruption charges.The investigation revolves around multiple trips to Las Vegas when Lee was serving as Englander's chief of staff. During one of those trips in 2017, Lee allegedly accepted multiple gifts from a businessperson and a developer, most of which exceeded the allowable limit, the Ethics Commission states. On Wednesday, Oct. 4, at approximately 12:20 p.m., two odd-sounding national alerts will go off on all TVs, radios and phones.Just remember: this is only a test. The messages are part of a nationwide test conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission.The point of these alerts is to test out the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency System.The alert will only last a minute on the radio, television broadcasts, cable systems, satellite radio, television providers and wireline video providers.
