DEAR JOAN: My 10-pound, 8-month-old puppy (part Havanese/part poodle) is very bright, very sweet and a challenge. I purchased him from a breeder when he was 6 months old.I take him out regularly to go potty, and he also seems comfortable going through the doggie door. However, he seems to prefer to poop in my home, and he periodically pees on the bed of my other dog, a 9-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback, who is also very smart and friendly. My two dogs seem to get along pretty well, and my puppy also plays with my daughter’s two small dogs, more his age and size.I hope I am not too late in helping him learn to always poop and pee outside. He was neutered a few weeks ago.— Sidney Mygatt, Los GatosDEAR SIDNEY: The first step is make sure there isn’t a medical reason for this behavior. Ask your vet to check your puppy for intestinal parasites and food allergies. If he’s perfectly healthy, then we look for other reasons. He might not be comfortable going outside. Are you seeking inspiration for a festive springtime platter to serve for brunch? Look no further than this very green salad, layered with fresh, clean and simple ingredients that sing spring. Asparagus, eggs and quinoa are layered over a bed of baby greens, drizzled with a briny citrus and caper vinaigrette. Elegant, light and healthy, this is an all-day salad; it’s not only good for brunch, but for lunch and dinner as well.In this recipe, hard-cooked eggs are quartered as well as grated. It’s aptly named for the brilliant yellow mimosa flowers that bloom in spring and share the same sunny color as the crumbled egg yolks. Typically, the crumbled eggs are showered over toasts and salads or used as an ingredient in deviled eggs. It’s also notable that the word “mimosa” applies to the popular orange juice and champagne morning cocktail (no relation to eggs). Hostess Brands President and CEO Andy Callahan knows that his company __ the maker of Twinkies, HoHos and other snack cakes __ is sometimes the butt of jokes.“A lot of people think a Twinkie has a shelf life of a thousand years,” Callahan said. “It doesn’t. Once it gets to the store, it typically has to be sold within 35 days.”Callahan says a steady stream of new products, like candy bar-inspired Kazbars and miniature Baby Bundt cakes, have been key to winning over skeptics and leading them back to old favorites. “When the consumer is reintroduced to a Twinkie, they’re always delighted because of our investment in our product quality,” Callahan said.Hostess, which was founded in 1925, almost didn’t make it into the new millennium. The company filed for bankruptcy twice before private equity investors formed Hostess Brands in 2013. Callahan discussed the challenge of leading a brand with a history, as well as his service in the U.S. Navy, with The Associated Press. His comments have ...Latest news
