Rishi Sunak’s in crisis over immigration. WTF happens next? LONDON — Rishi Sunak might just be better off staying in bed on Tuesday. The embattled U.K. prime minister is on a last-minute charm offensive as he tries to get a massively controversial piece of asylum legislation through the House of Commons. Critics on both sides of his governing Conservative Party have knives out — and it’s going to be a major test of his authority, with few good outcomes.Let POLITICO walk you through the latest Tory drama — and try to work out (with massive caveats) what the hell happens next.So what’s everyone squabbling about?Asylum policy. Specifically, the long-running Conservative promise to deport undocumented migrants to Rwanda. The hardline plan is meant to deter people from crossing the English Channel in small boats, and thereby help Sunak meet a big promise to “Stop the Boats” amid concerns about migration. But it’s been snarled in the courts since its inception under Boris Johnson in 2022, with the Supreme Court last month ruling the whole...

Should Alex Caruso earn NBA All-Star consideration? His Chicago Bulls teammates say yes. ‘He’s everything.’ As the NBA prepares to open All-Star voting next week, the Chicago Bulls are already starting an early campaign for one of their teammates: Alex Caruso.Caruso isn’t the most obvious bid for an All-Star vote. He’s a defensive specialist who often comes off the bench for one of the lowest-ranked teams in the league. He averages fewer than 10 points per game.Yet each of his teammates agrees that no one on the Bulls makes a greater impact than Caruso.“He’s everything,” DeMar DeRozan said. “Every team would love a guy like Alex Caruso. He is a guy that can play with every single team in the NBA. The crowd loves him, the intensity that he brings, the excitement that he brings, the competitor that he is — it’s amazing.”The Bulls know it’ll be an uphill battle to get Caruso any proper consideration for an All-Star vote. The formula for making an All-Star game, which will be played Feb. 18 in Indianapolis, is fairly straightforward:...

Wisconsin GOP leader says he’s finished negotiating with university over pay raises, diversity deal MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s top Republican lawmaker said Monday that he is finished negotiating with the Universities of Wisconsin over a deal that would have given the university system’s employees a pay raise and paid for the construction of a new engineering building in exchange for reductions in staff positions focused on diversity, equity and inclusion. The UW Board of Regents rejected the deal in a hastily called special meeting on Saturday after regents voiced concerns about its targeting of DEI efforts. The fight in Wisconsin comes amid a broader cultural battle playing out across the nation over college diversity initiatives.Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, who reached the deal with UW President Jay Rothman, said Monday on WISN-AM that he hopes the regents will reconsider, but that he’s not open to making any changes. “This deal was negotiated in good faith,” Vos said. “We’re not changing one thing in this deal. We are not going backwards. If anything...
