LEWISTON, Maine (NewsNation) — President Joe Biden will visit Lewiston Friday to mourn with a community that witnessed the deadliest shooting in the state’s history a little more than a week ago.The Oct. 25 shooting at a bowling alley and bar killed 18 people and injured 13 more. MIAMI (AP) — The man who served as look-out in a South Florida shooting that left three people dead and 20 others injured was sentenced to life in prison Friday.A Miami-Dade circuit judge said Davonte Barnes, 24, played an integral role in the 2021 Memorial Day weekend shooting at a music hall before handing down 23 concurrent life sentences, the Miami Herald reported. Barnes was convicted in September of three counts of second-degree murder and 20 counts of attempted second-degree murder.The shooting followed an escalating dispute between two Opa-locka gangs, officials said. Prosecutors showed jurors how they said members of Barnes’ gang pulled into the parking lot at El Mula Banquet Hall before the end of a show and opened fire with high-powered rifles as patrons were leaving. (AP) — Utah prosecutors have charged a former county clerk with three felonies and other counts for allegedly shredding and otherwise mishandling ballots from the 2020 and 2022 elections.The alleged misdeeds involved ballots cast by about 5,000 voters in Juab County, a desert area of west-central Utah with about 12,000 residents.Former Juab County Clerk/Auditor Alaina Lofgran is accused of allowing ballots to be shredded soon after the 2022 election in violation of a law requiring their preservation for at least 22 months. California lawmaker Wendy Carrillo arrested on suspicion of drunken driving

(AP) — A California legislator who is running for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council was arrested early Friday on suspicion of drunken driving, according to law enforcement and jail records.Officers responded to a report of a traffic collision around 12:20 a.m. in Los Angeles and took Wendy Carrillo, the driver, into custody, Officer Annie Moran said. Carrillo, who represents parts of northeastern and east Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. Jail records show she was held on a misdemeanor offense.In a statement later Friday, Carrillo said she crashed into parked vehicles and that no one was hurt. Earthquake rocks northwest Nepal, felt as far as India’s capital

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook northwestern Nepal and was felt in neighboring India late Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.6 magnitude quake had a depth of 17. 9 kilometers (11.12 miles) near the mountain town of Jumla, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.The quake struck just before midnight when many people already were asleep in their homes. Tremors also were felt in the Indian capital, New Delhi.Earthquakes are common in mountainous Nepal. State of local emergency lifts in Harrison Hot Springs as pumps at water plant fixed

HARRISON HOT SPRINGS, B.C. — A state of local emergency has lifted in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs, east of Vancouver, just days after it was issued when problems at the local water treatment facility put water availability at risk.A statement from Mayor Ed Wood says two pumps are now in full working order at the plant and an external backup pump is also available, if needed.The treatment plant relies on three working pumps but Wood said two of the pumps failed on Wednesday.Although the remaining pump was able to adequately supply Harrison’s drinking water and firefighting needs throughout the emergency, Wood said he wanted to act proactively, in case the last pump shut down.His statement released Friday cancels the state of local emergency and thanks village staff and outside agencies for their help.A reason for the sudden problems with the two pumps has not been released.This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 3, 2023.The Canadian Press

2 teens charged in shooting death of 86-year-old man in Auburn Gresham

CHICAGO — Police say two teens face felony charges in connection with the death of an elderly man last month in the city’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood. A 15-year-old is charged with first-degree murder and a 16-year-old is charged with armed carjacking following the events of Sept. 23.
