Jury retires in marathon B.C. murder trial, after lawyer tells of death threats VANCOUVER — A British Columbia Supreme Court jury has retired to deliberate in the first-degree murder trial of Ibrahim Ali, more than eight months after he pleaded not guilty to killing a 13-year-old girl in a Metro Vancouver park in 2017.The judge’s instructions to the jury on Thursday had been delayed, after Ali’s lawyer Kevin McCullough told the court the defence team had received death threats over the case.In remarks that can only now be reported with the jury sequestered, McCullough on Tuesday read out a message that said his family faced “a violent and brutal death” before Christmas.McCullough was unable to attend court in person the next day because he was at home in Victoria due to the threats, forcing the instruction of the jury to be postponed until Thursday. Justice Lance Bernard told the jurors the Crown’s case is circumstantial, requiring them to infer as the only reasonable conclusion that Ali forced the girl off a path and into a wooded area ...

Dangers linger at abandoned Workhouse jail, city mulls future plans

Dangers linger at abandoned Workhouse jail, city mulls future plans ST. LOUIS - Last week, FOX 2 exposed dangers at the former St. Louis Medium Security Institution (MSI) Jail, also known as the Workhouse. The city's top public safety official now calls the issues there “eye-opening" and says he’s looking into changes to alleviate growing safety concerns. Recently, three young men got into the facility through holes in the fencing and unintentionally locked themselves into an old cell. It’s been three weeks since that incident. Though it may seem humorous, police say it’s no laughing matter.   A spokesman told FOX 2 that city staff had been requested to repair the fencing last week. The same holes in the fences remain.    Highway with ‘Loneliest Road in America’ also runs through St. Louis region “That triggers some concerns for me,” said Alderman Tom Oldenburg of the incident, during Thursday’s meeting with the aldermanic Public Safety Committee.   He asked the Public Safety Director, Charles Coyle, what was being done about those concerns.Closi...

Police saving lives unseen: Behind the scenes in mental health responses ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - For every police case that leads to criminal charges, there are many others that never make the news.Like a recent scene in Maryland Heights that shut down an entire street but did not lead to criminal charges.Maryland Height Police Lt. Rich Wagner said, “We were able to get the area cleared and allow that individual to come down on his own.” Alderman proposes open-carry trigger law in St. Louis Lt. Wagner says Crisis Intervention Team training, also known as CIT, prevented a possible tragedy.“Social work is a part of our trade,” Wagner added. There are other examples, like this past Tuesday, when FOX 2 captured video of a St. Charles Police negotiation with a man in a Walgreens parking lot. It also ended peacefully, with no criminal charges.Last year, we featured a dramatic North County scene in which a woman stole a police car and crashed it.You could hear officers on the bodycam footage we obtained say, “It could've been worse. Violent crime spike has L.A. police chief concerned

Violent crime spike has L.A. police chief concerned While there appears to have been a reduction in all categories of violent crime in Los Angeles, Police Chief Michel Moore expressed serious concern earlier this week about the number of recent shootings and homicides.Moore’s comments came during the Dec. 5 meeting of the L.A. Board of Police Commissioners, the civilian-run body that oversees the department.  “After some eight-plus months of being in the negative on both [shootings and homicides], we saw that trend begin to change in September, October and November,” the police chief said, adding that both of those categories of violent crime were higher this November compared to the same time in 2022. Moore referenced some of the recent violent crime that has occurred, specifically calling out a Granda Hills home invasion on Dec. 2 where the homeowner shot and killed one of four suspects who broke into his family’s house at gunpoint.  The other three suspects fled the scene, though police believe at least one of them was injure...

‘The Finals’ is a chaotic take on the arena shooter and it’s out now

‘The Finals’ is a chaotic take on the arena shooter and it’s out now When Embark Studios began working on “The Finals,” executive producer Rob Runesson wanted to create a game that allowed his team to say “yes” more than “no.” Can they set it in different locales? Yup. Can they have people dressed as pandas? Why not. What if UFO suddenly invade the area? That’s a bit crazy but OK.That’s how you end up with a game like “The Finals,” which announced that it’s launching today during The Game Awards. It’s a free-to-play team-based arena shooter for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. It’s a title that’s built on the premise that players are contestants in the ultimate combat entertainment game. They can choose from a light, medium or heavy character. Each one has a distinct playstyle, weapons, gadgets and special abilities. Light characters are quick, and deal damage with weapons such as SMGs but have low health. Medium characters attack from the midrange wit...
